Granby Row

The name of Rutland Square (now Parnell Square) dates from 1791 and comes from Charles Manners, fourth Duke of Rutland, the Lord Lieutenant who died in office in 1787, after a three years' Viceroyalty. The adjoining Granby Row, an older name, comes from the title of the Duke's father, John Manners, Marquess of Granby, who did not live to succeed to the dukedom. He was one of the most famous soldiers of his time, well known as a cavalry commander in the Seven Years' War.
