Castletown House, Kildare

Architects: Alessandro Galilei & Edward Lovett Pearce
Interior Access

This corner room was used as an office and later as a Breakfast Parlour. It has its original 1720s pine wainscot and tall narrow oak doors. The ceiling is coved with a heavily moulded cornice. The writing desk was installed in the 1760s. Over the chimney-piece it is still possible to see the duck egg blue of the 1760s decoration beneath layers of paint. The modern brown stain has been taken from the original decoration of the room.

Between the windows is a sample of Volunteer linen (donated by Mr John S. Bereman of Chicago). It was printed nearby at Leixlip by Harpur's linen mills to commemorate the provincial review of the Irish Volunteers in the Phoenix Park in 1782. Lord Charlemont, Commander-in-Chief of the Volunteers, is shown leading the review.

Above the chirnney-piece are two pictures that are original to Castletown. 'Midnight Modern Conversation' after Hogarth, from The Rake's Progress, was painted from an engraving of the original. Above, the portrait of King William III was a gift from the sitter to Speaker Conolly (donated by Mr and Mrs Walter Pharr of New York).
