The Green Drawing Room

The Conollys formally received important visitors to the house in the Green Drawing Room which was the saloon or principal reception room. The room was redecorated in the 1760s and like the other state rooms reflects the neo-classical taste of the architect Sir William Chambers. The Greek key decoration on the ceiling is repeated on the pier glasses and the chimney-piece. Originally these were pier tables with a Greek key frieze and copies of these may be made in the future. The chimney-piece is similar to one designed by Chambers for Lord Charlemont's Casino at Marino.

The walls were originally covered with green silk and fragments of this survived. The present silk was recently woven by Prelle of Lyon and the gilded fillet copied from Chambers' design for the fillet in the gallery at Osterley Park, Middlesex (donated by the Irish Georgian Society).

The seat furniture, with original early eighteenth-century tapestry covers, are probably Irish and came from Headfort, County Meath (donated by the Patrick and Aimee Butler Foundation of St. Paul Minnesota). The English lacquered cabinet with painted ltalianate panels is inscribed inside the door, 'From Mrs. Conlly (Conolly) to Miss Burten' her great niece.

Above the chimney-piece is a copy of Van Dyck's portrait of Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford and his secretary, Sir Philip Mainwaring. This picture came to Castletown when Lady Anne Wentworth married Speaker Conolly's nephew, William Conolly in 1752. The elaborately carved frame is Irish.

To the left of the central door is a portrait of Mrs Conolly with her niece and to the right Speaker Conolly (donated by the London Chapter of the Irish Georgian Society). Both portraits are by Charles Jervas.
