Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin / Introduction Christ Church Cathedral is the Church of Ireland Cathedral for the Diocese of Dublin and Glendalough. Its origins date to about 1038 when the Viking settlers constructed a cathedral on this site. The present building dates to 1172 when Archbishop O'Toole and the Norman knight Richard de Clare known as Strongbow initiated the building work. Modeled along european lines, the canons of the cathedral were monks - Canons regular of St Augustine. When the church in England broke away from Rome, the majority of the Irish Bishops followed suit and the last Augustinian prior became the first dean. This site will contain the full text and illustrations from a lavishly bound book that was published to commemorate the restoration of the Cathedral by George Edward Street in 1882. The frontispiece reads as: The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity commonly called Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin
An account of the restoration of the fabirc by George Edmund Street RA, Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy and member of the Imperial and Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna with an historical sketch of the cathedral by Edward Seymour MA, Precintor of Christ Church Cathedral and a dedication by Sir Theordore Martin KCB LLD
