Duchas the state heritage service has temporarily stopped processing archaeological excavation licences, causing up to 100 projects may be delayed. Worst hit are developments which have been granted planning permission subject to an archaeological survey. A huge backlog of applications and the shortage of suitably qualified archaeologists, have led to Duchas requesting builders not to submit licence applications until further notice.
