There have been several attempts to recover the dignity of O'Connell Street over the past 25 years, and perhaps the proposed conference centre/retail development currently the subject of much rivalry among developers will assist finally in this aim. One thing is certain: only the highest quality buildings must be permitted on this street. This was the guiding principle of the committee that oversaw the rebuilding of O'Connell Street in the 1920s and those structures, with their cut stone faµades, still have the mark of quality.
