The spike rears its extremely high and narrow head again
Just when you thought it was safe to walk down O'Connell Street, the spike is back!!! Dublin Corporation is forging ahead with plans to spend at least £4 million of public money on a controversial stainless steel spire at the site of Nelson Pillar, blown up by the IRA in 1966. The spire is 120 metres high and three metres wide at the bottom, and was selected from 205 entries in a competition for 'a new symbol and image of Dublin for the 21st century'.
