A bridge too far for the Liffey

The Sunday Times

The Loop Line bridge, over the River Liffey in Dublin, could be demolished because it is too ugly. A European funding agency report recommends that the eyesore be removed as part of a plan to clean up the city's notoriously dirty river. Opened in 1891, the giant railway bridge connects Connolly station on the north side with Westland Row station to the south. While it is a central feature in the city, its style has been scorned by architects and designers since it was built. Chief among their criticisms is the fact that it obscures views of the Custom House, James Gandon's masterpiece of Georgian architecture.
