Another week, another opening succumbs to foot and mouth. Due to take place on Wednesday, the formal reopening of Sligo's reborn Model Arts Centre, renamed the Model Arts and Niland Gallery, will have to wait. The old complex has been dramatically transformed and extended during a hibernation that lasted several years. In a careful act of husbandry by the architects McCullough Mulvin, the constructional deadwood that had built up over almost a century and a half has been lopped and topped, tangled thickets thinned, the entire structure pruned to restore its essential shape and fresh new shoots grafted on to the original.
