When is a museum a museum of a museum? Thanks to an absence of investment, Ireland's Natural History Museum in Merrion Street, Dublin, has, by default, become a unique national treasure. Almost nothing has changed since the moustached missionary and explorer Dr David Livingstone cut the tape on its opening day in 1856 before disappearing off to Africa again. In 2001, this space is an oddity that captures the mindset of the Victorian era. Its magnificently airy double-galleried great hall and three floors are full of stuffed, stripped, dried or pickled curios, all displayed with a liberal helping of glass and French polish.
