Gate raises curtain on plans for new facilities

The Gate Theatre is seeking planning permission to build a long-awaited new rehearsal space and improved backstage facilities. If successful in its application to Dublin City Council, the theatre will partly fund the €3 million plus renovation from the €2.15 million (Ł1.7m) grant it received, as part of €45.7 million (Ł36m) allocation from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands to improve arts infrastructure throughout the state. The rest will be fundraised. At present, there is "very very little space" in the 18th century building, says deputy director Marie Rooney.
