Extensive, quality housing is the most exciting part of Ballymun's ambitious rejuvenation
Ballymun's redevelopment is finally taking shape, though the results fall somewhat short of the promised 'model town for the 21st century'. Amid all the muck on wet days and wind-blown dust on dry days, numerous palisade fences and builders' site offices, all overlooked by the Stalag-like blocks of system-built flats, a brave new world of sorts is being created in Ballymun. One of its most visible signs is the huge crane that towers over the tubular steel frame of the new Civic Centre, designed by BDP Architects and due for completion early next year. But the real action is taking place on less prominent and more extensive sites where batches of new housing are nearing completion.
