Room for city to expand - in Dublin Bay

The Irish Times

Dublin Bay could provide a radical solution to the problems of urban expansion. Now a joint joint project involving Irish and Dutch architecture students seriously challenges how we view this major amenity. Visceral opposition to the Dublin Port Company's latest attempt to claim a further 52 acres of land underlines just how sacrosanct many people in the capital regard Dublin Bay. Indeed, any notion that the bay should be developed would be rejected out of hand. The Dutch would not see it that way at all. With their long history of land reclamation - in effect, manufacturing a country out of a swamp at the edge of the North Sea - they can't understand why it hasn't occurred to us to make use of the bay for urban expansion.
