Dublin spire may never have a name

The Sunday Times

Dublin city council has still not decided what to call the 400ft stainless steel monument it is erecting on O'Connell Street. Work begins tomorrow on what city officials are labelling the Spire of Dublin, but this is just a working title, and the controversial monument could be left nameless. Project managers are particularly wary of official titles because of Dubliners' tradition of re-branding public sculptures with saucy nicknames. This convention turned the Molly Malone statue at Grafton Street into the "tart with the cart" and the Anna Livia fountain into the "hoor be the sewer".
