The twin chimneys of Dublin's Pigeon House power station featured in a recent advertising campaign, striped with the city's football colours of light blue and navy, instead of their familiar red and white. The ad had been faked, of course, but the use of the landmark to combine two fondly held aspects of the city's identity invoked a heartfelt reaction. To Dubliners it must seem the twin chimneys of the Poolbeg peninsula have always been there. They frame the view of Dublin Bay from most parts of the city, and frame the city from the sea or the air.
