Why, when Irteland builds more one-off houses than anybody else in Europe, do they all look so alike? Why, in a society whose citizens pride themselves on their individuality, is so little value placed on innovation in housing? Why is the same basic model — the suburban bungalow, with or without dormer windows — stamped out by the thousand and scattered across the Irish countryside in a one-size-fits-all approach to living on the land?
