Adding something to a national architectural treasure is a business fraught with peril at the best of times. In the case of Irish architect Niall McLaughlin's bandstand beside the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill in East Sussex, a bang-up-to-date design that is as much sculpture as architecture, the matter was complicated by the belated appreciation of the pavilion's architectural value.
