How good neighbourhoods can be designed without relying on front and back gardens

The Irish Times

Seeing is believing, as the old saying goes. We need to be faced with concrete evidence in three-dimensional form before we can really visualise something. And that applies with particular force to alternative forms of housing to the standard suburban house with front and back gardens. Nobody could accuse the Royal Institute of Architects in Ireland (RIAI) of being laggards in this respect. Over the past two years, the institute - working in collaboration with the Irish Planning Institute (IPI) - has been trying to drive home the message that there are other, more interesting and more sustainable options for housing in Ireland.
