The O'Connell Street monument is finally in place, having suffered as many delays and setbacks as it has endured derogatory nicknames. It has been a source of controversy since its inception in 1999 and the public seemed in the main antipathetic or at best indifferent to the proposed spike. As it was erected the sculpture started to win the grudging admiration of the people watching its progress.
