The news that Busarus is to get its first big refurbishment is something that ought to cheer those who have watched the 50-year-old modernist jewel grow ever grubbier and more bedraggled. With a budget of just €1.7m, however, and with CIE indicating that the interior of the listed building will be changed significantly, and its distinctive exterior canopy "upgraded", there is reason to fear the worst. Built between 1945 and 1953, at what was a high cost of more than £1m, Busarus is an uneasy building and seems always to have been so. Designed by a team led by Michael Scott, and influenced heavily by Le Corbusier, it fulfilled its primary function but many intended civilising touches were either never applied or never worked.
