The lights went out on Dublin's Spire last week, replaced by a glow from the red faces at Dublin City Council and a worrying implication that the 120 metre high monument will prove an ongoing financial headache for taxpayers. The twinkling lights flickered and died more than 19 years ahead of schedule. The 1,200 bulbs on the €5m monument were supposed to have lasted 20 years, but the plug was pulled by Dublin City Council after more and more of the lights failed before the Spire even reached its first anniversary.
