Douglas Wallace Architects and Designers is delighted that two recent projects, McKanes Pharmacy in Ballina and the NUI Galway Sports Pavilion have been short-listed for display in the Institute of Creative Advertising and Design (ICAD) 2003 Awards Exhibition at The National Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Dublin 4.
McKanes Pharmacy in Ballina is the only retailer selected for display in the "Interior Design - Retail" category, while the National University of Ireland Sports Pavilion in Galway is the only leisure facility to be featured in the "Interior Design - Leisure" category. Both projects were designed and completed by Douglas Wallace's Galway office.
Douglas Wallace Architects and Designers have had a very successful year; the company won the Best Commercial Interior Category at the Institute of Designers in Ireland (IDI) awards in Belfast last month, for the design of Peter Mark's Swords salon in Dublin. Douglas Wallace also featured at the "Architecture at the Edge" exhibition, part of the Tulca Festival of Visual Art which took place in Galway in October.
Hugh Wallace, Managing Director of Douglas Wallace, said: "Douglas Wallace has had a triumphant year both from a commercial retail design and architectural point of view. The company has worked hard to produce work on the cutting edge of Irish design. To be selected for exhibition at the ICAD awards is an honour and a fitting end to 2003."
McKanes Pharmacy was designed by Emer Maughan from Douglas Wallace Galway. The project involved the refurbishment of a family run business in Ballina. The design has been a tremendous success for Managing Director Dorothy McKane who recently commented: "The clear layout, clean lines and high product visibility have made dealing with us easier and faster. Douglas Wallace totally exceeded our expectations. Commercially, our new design is hugely successful, with universally positive feedback from clients young and old. If I have one regret it is that I did not use Douglas Wallace sooner."
The design of a new Sports Pavilion for National University of Ireland Galway was also the only project selected for exhibition in the "Interior Design – Leisure" category. Douglas Wallace director, John O'Neill, the design architect for the development said: "The use of form, colour and pattern with basic building components make the project particularly exciting. A rich tapestry of tangerine orange and burgundy panels introduces colour and pattern to the inclined walls within the building while slot windows offer spectacular views of the river and Lough Corrib."
Madeline Larkin, Director of Douglas Wallace Galway said: "We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen for such a prestigious and dynamic exhibition. Douglas Wallace is very proud of the projects we undertake and to be recognised for our work by the IDI and now ICAD is a great justification for what we do."
The Institute of Creative Advertising and Design (ICAD) is an organisation set up to foster and reward creative excellence in Irish advertising and design. The ICAD final award winners will be announced at an awards night on December 3rd presented by broadcaster and journalist David McWilliams. The ICAD judging panel this year boasts two internationally renowned figures in Gerry Farrell, Creative Director of the Leith Agency in Edinburgh and Roger Kennedy of Saatchi & Saatchi in London.
The exhibition, displaying the best of the advertising and design industry's output over the last eighteen months, will run from now until Friday 5th December at The Print Museum, Beggars Bush, Dublin 4.
