The high rise tower that forms part of the redevelopment of the Tivoli theatre site on Francis Street, Dublin 8, is a "a design beacon" that "like the Spire" is designed to be viewed "from a distance", according to Hugh Wallace of Douglas Wallace architects, project managers on the €20 million scheme. He denies that the tower will impinge on the character of the surrounding area. Whether the locals agree remains to be seen at the end of the appeal period in two weeks. Dublin City Council granted planning permission on October 15th to demolish the existing theatre and build a new one, as well as 112 apartments in six blocks with shops and offices on the ground floor and 60 car-parking spaces. O'Mahony Pike is the architect.
