€200m facelift for historic square

The Irish Independent

A €200m plan unveiled yesterday aims to turn Dublin's historic - but rundown - Parnell Square into a national cultural quarter. The blueprint includes the reorganisation of the Rotunda Hospital campus, a new public garden, a revamp of the Garden of Remembrance and major new theatre and museum attractions. Under the Dublin City Council plan the Rotunda Hospital will have new four-storey buildings facing onto the square. The restoration of the old Rotunda Pleasure Garden is identified for the centre of the Rotunda grounds. The garden will be linked to all the surrounding streets and the Garden of Remembrance. This will create a new North-South pedestrian route form the Hugh Lane Gallery, across the Garden of Remembrance, through the new Rotunda garden onto Parnell Street.
