Ireland offers registered status to building professionals

CIOB International

The Building Control Bill, introduced in the Irish Parliament late last year, strengthens the enforcement powers of local building authorities and at the same time provides for registration of the titles of ‘Architect’, ‘Quantity Surveyor’ and ‘Building Surveyor’. This means that entries of names on the statutory registers to be established when the Bill becomes law will be confined to people with recognised qualifications, training and experience. Commenting on this important development, Kevin Sheridan of CIOB Ireland and vice-president of the European Building Surveyors Group AEEBC, told CIOB International that the Bill is designed to ensure consumer protection by ensuring that only the three classes of professionals whose names appear in the relevant register will be able to use the titles of building surveyor, quantity surveyor and architect.
