The typical Irish household spends well over €1,000 a year on heating, but it should be possible to heat a house for €100, or €150. That’s what we are told by professionals who are designing and building modern eco-houses, which eschew oil and coal and draw heat largely from the sun, as well as using other techniques to save energy. With fossil fuel reserves having a limited lifespan and talk of oil wells running low, people want alternatives. Buildings account for about half our national energy bill, so it’s understandable that attention should turn to what kind of houses, offices, factories and other structures we want.
