Restored 'follies' will beat the band

The Irish Independent

Built to celebrate the arrival of Queen Victoria to Dublin in 1849, the bandstand and sun shelter on Dun Laoghaire's East Pier are to be restored to their former glory. And Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council has also announced that it will undertake the restoration of the obelisk at Killiney Hill Park. It was confirmed yesterday that tenders have been sought from contractors with proven experience of conservation projects to complete the restoration of the protected structures before the end of the year. A spokesman for the council said yesterday that both the bandstand and shelter were in a poor state of repair, with glass having to be removed from the shelter last year because of safety concerns.
