Business is booming for architects, yet several Irish firms are expanding overseas, including Murray O'Laoire and HKR (Horan Keogan Ryan). HKR, with 180 employees, had a turnover in 2005 of €21 million. Of its 180 staff, 125 work in HKR's head office off Kildare Street, 35 work in its London office and 20 work in its Manchester office. HKR expects to open in Tampa Bay, Florida, soon while central and eastern Europe are next. Gerry Ryan, HKR's managing director, says: "The skill sets we have developed in Ireland are very transportable." HKR's move into the UK came courtesy of an Irish client. A project office was established initially and this evolved into a full service office. To build a base abroad, it's vital to have key local staff. Says Ryan: "We look for well established people who have reached a glass ceiling in their firm."
