Fluidcity

The Shannon-Erne River system can support a population of 240,000 (compared to the 80,000 of Limerick, Athlone, Rooskey and Carrick today). People live in the countryside, facing the river. Much like the travelling cinema bus today, a river-borne caravanserai arrives once a week, bringing the city to your doorstep...

A moving city that appears overnight, then vanishes quietly, departing in the mist to a new location. An ephemeral resource-soft infrastructure-changing size and make-up at every visit, adapting organically to the desires of the inhabitants of this super-rural riverside settlement. The Shannon-Erne river system, 278km long with 800km of shoreline, could support 240,000 inhabitants, three times the current population, and be self-sufficient in terms of food and energy use. One day a week, the fluidcity travels to your door in the countryside, bringing with it the buzz of urban life: cinema, bank, shop, museum.
