Temple Bar celebrates 15 years of regeneration
To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the regeneration of Temple Bar, a retrospective photographic exhibition called Temple Bar 15 opened last week at the Irish Architectural Archive on Merrion Square in Dublin. The images, which date from 1985, serve as a reminder of what the area was once like. There had been a proposal in the late 1980s to turn Temple Bar into a bus station. Before the physical regeneration of the area, its streets were lined with decomposing buildings, surface car parks and run-down properties. Also on display is the architectural model created by Group 91, a consortium of eight emerging architectural practices which submitted a collective proposal in 1991 to rebuild Temple Bar. Yvonne Farrell, of Grafton Architects and Member of Group 91, said: ‘‘The gamble of this project transformed our understanding of what makes a piece of city. It requires the energy and commitment of a vast range of people, over time." The exhibition is being hosted by the Irish Architectural Archive in partnership with Temple Bar Cultural Trust, formerly Temple Bar Properties.
