In an Ulster that appears to care little for its historic buildings and conservation areas, comment on the Grand Opera House extension has, unsurprisingly, focused more on the tremendous bar facilities that it will provide than its design. In attempting a contrasting approach, so as not to dilute the unique qualities of the Grand Opera House, the architect has created a noisy extension that shouts at you. It visually competes with, rather than remains visually subservient to, the Opera House. The extension would appear to have as big an ego as its designer.
