Cork needs an iconic building on par with the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Opera House in Sydney and Gaudi’s works in Barcelona. KOBW architects director Joseph O’Brien believes an iconic building and an integrated approach is a vital part of Cork’s docklands development. "These buildings draw people to those cities, make a strong statement about their attitude and culture — and act as an icon of instant recognition around the world," he said. The redevelopment of Cork’s docklands and beyond presents an opportunity to create a modern, cultural statement about Cork, he said. "The city and the port needs an iconic building to act as a calling card in terms of its position in the world," added Mr O’Brien. He proposed to locate a new art gallery dedicated to the maritime history of Cork in a location either in the docklands or at a site further down the port.
