The Guildhall
The re-opening to traffic of the centre of Derry will lead to the economic regeneration of the traditional heart of the city, according to business leaders. NIO minister David Hanson yesterday announced that one of Europe’s leading urban design firms is heading an £8 million revamp of Derry’s Guildhall Square and Waterloo Place. The development will include "significant improvement works" to the area as well as a "controlled traffic route through the existing pedestrian zone". Business leaders believe the pedestrianisation of these two areas almost 20 years ago virtually killed off the historic centre of Derry. The city’s commercial heart traditionally stretched through Waterloo Place and along Strand Road. But the pedestrianisation plan moved the centre to the new Foyleside shopping centre and Carlisle Road.
