A historic house that has featured in a number of celebrated literary works is at the centre of a new controversy. Tyrone House near Kilcolgan and overlooking the famous Clarinbridge oyster beds in Co Galway, is now dilapidated, but the family who originally owned it insists that the State has reneged on a promise to buy it. The 18th century property, formerly the home of the St George family, was the inspiration for 'The Big House of Inver' by Somerville and Ross as well as for the final play written by WB Yeats, 'The Death of Cuchulain'. The renowned 18th century Irish architect, John Roberts designed the house for Christopher French St George.
