The Co-operative Group has shortlisted four architects who will compete to draw up a masterplan for its 'gateway' site in Manchester city centre. The Co-op said last October it planned to quit its headquarters in the north of the city centre, around New Century House on Corporation Street. The present 20-acre site, the home to more than 3,000 staff, includes buildings on Hanover Street, Redfern Street and Federation Street. The group says spiralling maintenance costs of the buildings are expected to total more than £100m in the next 10 years. The four finalists in the masterplan competition are Manchester-based BDP, Arup, KPF Associates and Heneghan Peng.
