"High, higher than the sun, you shoot me from a gun, I need you to elevate me here, at the corner of your lips, as the orbit of your hips, eclipse, you elevate my soul" (U2)
"Young life is breathed on the glass, the world that was not comes to pass" (Joyce)
The design for the tower is a celebration of faith. This faith is thus;
1.The world will regenerate itself = wind power/solar power.
2.There will be no more war = a symbol for peace = a bird, two wings in prayer, a rainbow.
3.There will be a worldwide community based on humanitarian doctrines
and not economics alone = a mixed community sharing common goals.
The tower is a destination, a powerful symbol of sustainable development, a friend in the night sky, a welcoming, outward going, yet embracing and engaging edifice, inhabited, occupied and enlivened by its population. This is a multi-use, multi-purpose beacon , guiding the way to future development and symbolising a re-population of Dublin and the docks.
The tower outrigging and base wings have two surfaces. The southerly and upward facing surfaces are sheathed in photo-voltaic panels (grants are available for these) which will provide enough electrical power to light the building at night and to supplement the power loads to the building generally. The undersides and west facing surfaces are lined with laminated glass panels. The laminate is a holographic film that will refract the light and produce a changing spectrum of colour by day and night. This will be a dramatic spectacle when lit up at night, highly visible down the Liffey quayside to Dublin itself. The effect will be of a shimmering wing or sail symbolising dance, movement and perhaps the return of the tall ships. By day the light refraction will be more akin to a rainbow.
The leading edge of the prow is lined with a series of alluminium wind turbines generating additional power on cloudy days. These will add to the animation of the tower as they rotate and catch the sun, like the bangle clad arm of a dancer, twisting in movement.
The building will provide for a sustainable community with a mixture of work place, living and relaxation environments. There are two floors of restaurant (s), a nightclub and bars at ground and first floors spilling out and animating the quayside, three floors of office space and fifteen floors of apartments. The apartment layouts are flexible but typically could provide for 29 x 2 bed, 14 x 1 bed and 8 x 3 bedroom homes. All apartments have extensive balconies, mostly south facing, all with river views. Cycle storage is provided at ground floor.The apartments are isolated from the nightclub by the offices.
U2 Studio
The studio space occupies the top three floors of the tower with the main 5.5 metre studio at the top. The studio will be an illuminated beacon and a symbol of music that is so much part of Dublin. The studio has three terraces and a large roof garden at the 20th floor. The garden space provides the acoustic separation from the apartments and is partially covered giving shelter in addition to a large open south facing space. The studio is fully glazed to maximise views and daylight with curved walls of insulating glass to give good reverberation qualities. A secured car parking area and separate secure access is provided at basement and ground level with additional storage areas at first floor.
