We have developed a building within the given parameters of the competition; yet have chosen to “flow” outside the bounds with a tensile structure that forms a connection with the plaza, the historical structure on the point, and the waters of the quay. Although the building could stand alone without this feature, the symbolism, protection from the weather, and beauty of the glass covered tensile structure is a unique feature of this proposal.
The platform itself has a masonry skin and rectangular forms to echo the solid forms of historic Dublin. Retail and office space are housed in this four-story structure, with parking in the basement. The shapes of the masonry and windows begin to flow and curve where the point-block is connected to the platform. This gives us a fluid yet strong connection to the tower element.
The point-block itself is clad on its lower floors with a lighter-color masonry with flowing forms to provide the transition to the curving, curtain-wall upper floors of the tower.
The point-block represents the ever-changing future of the city. Its flowing shapes diminish as each floor rises from the platform, and are wrapped on the upper floors in multi-tinted glass and aluminum banding above the transitional masonry. Five residential units per floor are housed in the point-block. Common balconies on each floor facing south provide a joining outdoor area for residents.
The two-story U2 studio tops off the tower. A large outdoor plaza is available for their private use.
Green
Recycling spaces on all floors. Exterior lighting designed to eliminate light pollution around the building. Electric car recharging outlets in the garage. Sensors detecting the presence of people automatically turn off lights when the room is empty. Use of recycled materials in the construction and furnishing of the building. Operable windows provide natural ventilation.
Conclusion
The Landmark Tower is an opportunity for a structure of merit and beauty to proclaim the rebirth of an important area of Dublin’s past and future. We feel we have developed a conceptual design that embraces this history. We look forward to the opportunity to further develop this with you.
